Azealia Banks was born on 31 May, 1991 in Manhattan, New York. Her father died of pancreatic cancer when she was 2, and her mother raised her and two older sisters in Harlem, New York City. Banks developed an interest in music and dancing theatre at an early age. She performed in many off-Broadway musicals when she was 10. She also danced with National Dance Institute. She trained in performing arts at LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts as a teenager. She wasn’t much successful in her pursuit of an acting career and decided to drop out of LaGuardia to pursue a career in singing. She started writing rap and R&B songs.
She chose her stage name to be ‘Miss Bank$’. She released her debut recording named ‘Gimme a Chance’ on internet in November, 2008. She also produced a track named ‘Seventeen’. In the fall 2008, she signed a contract with XL Recordings, but left the label due to some conflicts.
After leaving XL Recordings, she got rid of her stage name ‘Miss Bank$’. She moved to Montreal and uploaded many demo tracks on YouTube. She had to come back to America when her Canadian visa expired. At that time, she had no job to make both ends meet. She had to dance at a strip club to earn a living. She describes that time as the most depressing.
In September 2011, Banks released her first single named ‘212’ on her website. Later, this became the lead single of her ‘EP 1991’. This track attained a lot of success. Banks also featured on ‘Shady Love’, which is a track from an American band ‘Scissor Sisters’. The feature remained uncredited. Later, Banks released two tracks name ‘Needsumluv’ and ‘Bambi’. ‘Bambi’ was produced by Paul Epworth and the track was selected as the soundtrack for a ‘Mugler’ fashion show in Paris.
Banks released her debut studio album’ ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ on iTunes, in November 2014 and the physical release was in March 2015.
