Born on June 23, 1983, as Evan Brooks Laich, he started playing minor hockey in his hometown Wawota, Saskatchewan while he was still very young. It is said that he was the top scorer during the 1999-2000 season. The runner-up for league MVP, Brooks Laich started playing junior hockey with Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL during the 2000-01 season and scored nine goals with 21 assists in 71 matches.
