Born on February 9, 1946, in Saint Joseph, Missouri, Jim Webb belonged to a military family and was the second of four children. His father was in the United States Air Force and due to the nature of his job, they moved a lot, so Webb lived in many states of the US.

Jim Webb then joined the United States Naval Academy. When he graduated in 1968, he was enlisted in the Marines and rose to the rank of a second lieutenant. He was with the Marines until 1972.

As a Marine, Webb was deployed to Vietnam, where he earned the Navy Cross, the Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts.

He received an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Marines in Beirut. He also went to Afghanistan in 2004 as an embedded journalist.

Webb served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs under President Ronald Reagan from 1984 to 1987.

Jim Webb ran his senate campaign in 2006 against Virginia Senator George Allen. Webb won it by 53.5% of the votes and later in that year, he was assigned to three committees, namely, Foreign Relations, Veterans’ Affairs, and Armed Services.

In 2015, Jim Webb officially launched his 2016 presidential campaign. The former senator announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States on July 2, 2015.

He withdrew from the Democratic race on October 20, 2015.  Following the withdrawal of his candidacy for the Democratic nomination, Webb openly considered running for president as an independent before ruling out such a run on February 11, 2016.

Webb’s moderate policy stances which include issues such as gun control, foreign policy, and illegal immigration, led to the speculation that he was a front-runner for the vice presidential nomination in 2008, although he ultimately took himself out of the running.
