Kendrick Lamar was born on 17 June, 1987 in Compton, California. His idols and inspiration were Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre since he was a child. He chose his moniker to be K-Dot. This mixtape got him a good local recognition and helped him sign a recording contract with a newly founded indie record label, Top Dawg Entertainment. For two years, Lamar recorded material with the label and released a 26 track mixtape named ‘Training Day’ in 2005.

From 2006 to 2007, Lamar appeared with many west coast rappers like Jay Rock and Ya Bot. Mostly, he appeared as an opening act for West Coast rapper The Game. He also featured in The Game’s songs ‘The Cypha’ and ‘Cali Niggaz’. In Jay Rock’s debut single ‘All My Life(In the Ghetto)’, Lamar was featured throughout the music video in 2008. In the same year, he released an EP and dropped his name K-Dot. Lamar also formed a hip hop group named Black Hippy.

Lamar’s fourth mixtape was named, ‘Overly Dedicated’ and was released under Top Dawg Entertainment. This mixtape did good and even appeared in Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A song from this mixtape, named ‘Ignorance is Bliss’ kindled the interest of Dr. Dre to work with Lamar.

Lamar released his first studio album, ‘Section.80’ in July, 2011. His album got a lot of positive reviews and sold 5300 digital copies without any TV or radio promotion campaign. Lamar was named the ‘New King of the West Coast’ by Snoop Dogg, Game and Dr. Dre himself.
