Born on March 23, 1955, Moses Malone graduated from Petersbug High School and intended to play for the University of Maryland. However, after being drafted by the ABA’s Utah Stars in 1974, he became the first ever basketball player to play in the professional leagues of USA, right from high school.
Starting his professional career with the Utah Stars, he also played for Spirits of St. Louis and moved to NBA in 1976. Despite being held by New Orleans Jazz, he was placed in the draft pool where he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers. He had a best pre-season as a center, but he never featured in the regular season for the Blazers after which he was traded to Buffalo Braves and then to Houston Rockets.
Malone’s reunion with Tom Nissalke, under whom he played at Utah Stars, made him one of the most ferocious rebounders in the game and was placed third behind Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. At just 23, he won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, and was a established name in the list of NBA’s all-time record holder for offensive rebounds.
Standing 6 ft 10 in, Moses Malone was best known for his indomitable spirit that got his side to NBA’s rebounding charts. The workhorse made records after records to make a difference in the game which also got him appraisal from opponent coaches. Having been placed at the All-Star team for straight nine season, Malone failed to register his name for the first time in his 10th season.
Malone also played with Washington Bullets, Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks before returning back to Philadelphia 76ers. He was again traded to Spurs in 1994. With a career record of 27,409 points in 1,329 games, he won several accolades and awards including 1983 NBA Champion, three-time NBA MVP, and was placed in Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Houston Rockets also retired Number 24, under which he played.
Married to Alfreda Moses, Malone had two sons with her. However, Alfreda sought for divorce, alleging physical and mental abuse for which he was even willing to pay $1,000 in child support for his sons. He died on September 13, 2015 in sleep leaving behind a net worth of $5 million.
