Styles P is an American rapper, author, and entrepreneur. He is most noted for being a member of hip-hop groups “The LOX” and “Ruff Ryders” and is the founder of “D-Block Records”.

Biography

Styles P, whose birth name is David Styles, was born on November 28, 1974, in Corona Queens, New York, USA, to a father from Bed-Stuy and a mother originally from South Africa.

When he was seven, little David’s parents divorced. He then moved with his mother to Yonkers where she had his little brother Gary, and then a sister.

As a teenager, Styles P grew a passion for rapping as well as song-writing. During this time, he became friends with Jadakiss and Sheek Louch who had similar interests as him and formed the hip-hop group “The Bomb Squad”. The trio began performing at local shows and producing their own demos with the hope to get signed on to a label. The group went on to change their name to “The Warlocks” before settling for “The LOX”.

In their late teen years, The Lox met fast-rising R&B sensation Mary J. Blige who was already a fan of theirs. Mary was said to be very impressed with their tough street lyrics that she decided to help make a career out of it. She gave them their big break by putting their demo in the hands of Sean “Diddy” Combs. Upon hearing the demo, Diddy hired the trio to write for Bad Boy Records.

At Bad Boy Records, The LOX wrote many major songs for major artists like Mariah Carey, Diddy, Mase, and the Notorious B.I.G, and even started to collaborate with them. This gained them instant notoriety and status within the hip-hop community and on mainstream charts.

Their journey went to the next level when they released critically acclaimed mixtapes that included their collaborations with other celebrity artists. This led to The LOX releasing their first solo album in January 1998 entitled “Money, Power & Respect”. The album was a chart-topping success and was certified platinum.

The Lox, however, chose to part ways with Bad Boy Records despite the success and exposure they enjoyed with the label. It was said that Bad Boy Records did not provide the group with a grimier rap aesthetic platform. They then moved on to Ruff Ryder Records where rappers like DMX and Eve enjoyed huge success. With their new label, The Lox released their second album “We Are The Streets” in 2000.
