Early Life and Career

Tank, whose birth name is Durell Babbs, was born on January 1, 1976, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to African American parents and was raised in Washington D.C.

As a schoolboy, Tank enjoyed listening and making music as well as playing sports. He enjoyed singing at his local church, where his cousin was the choir director. The singer was also a good sportsman and was described as a multisport athlete while attending Crossland High School where he graduated from. His abilities in American football, however, was what got the attention of many people. It specifically got him an opportunity to play American football in college on scholarship.

He would at this point have to decide whether to abandon his dreams of being on a big stage where he would serenade crowds with his voice or chase a footballing career. He chose the former.

His brave decision at the time was thought to be stupid, owing to the fact that even if he does not get to play football professionally, he would have a college education to fall back on.

Tank’s journey in the music industry almost immediately began as he started honing his craft with any gig he could find. It was turning to be a tumultuous journey for him until he landed what turned out to be a career-changing gig. Tank was chosen to become a background singer for Ginuwine during one of his many tours. He also got to work with Dave Hollister, whose album Chicago ’85… The Movie in 2000 includes several songs credited to the aspiring singer.

Following his experience on the tour, combined with his talent and passion for music, Tank took the bold step of releasing his own music. He got a recording contract with Blackground Records and in 2001, came up with his debut album “Force of Nature” which became an instant hit. The album was gold certified by RIAA and provided him with a break to become a popular face in the music industry.

A second album titled “One Man” came in 2002, following his previous one’s success. It was nearly as successful as its predecessor, with singles “One Man” and “Let Me Live” getting major airplay.

Tank has since then not looked back in his life and has managed to get more and more success with the string of albums he released afterward as well as numerous songwriting credits for artists such as Jamie Fox, Aaliyah, and Kelly Rowland.

He has to date, released five studio albums and has also collaborated with many major singers like Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, and Kris Stephens.
