Born Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kamal, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born to a fisherman father and housewife mother at Rameswaram, India. A person coming from a poor background, Kalam started working since his childhood and distributed newspapers after passing school. Despite having average grade, he was considered a bright student and had a fierceful heart. He attended Saith Joseph’s School and graduated in Physics and moved to Madras to study aerospace engineering.
Despite missing chance to become a fighter plane pilot, he moved to Aeronautical Development Establishment of Defence Research and Development Organisation as a scientist and started making helicopters for Indian Army. He was transferred to Indian Space Research Organisation where he deployed Rohini satellite to the earth’s orbit in 1980, which he considers his biggest achievement in life. He also started working on rocket and nuclear missile projects.
A Chief scientist adviser to the Prime Minister, he conducted several nuclear tests and helped electrical generation through thermal and nuclear plants. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam also served as the 11th President of India succeeding K R Narayanan. Having won the 2002 presidential electrical, he served the position from July 2002 to July 2007. Known as ‘The People’s President’, Kalam did not have much success as a President, however was loved and adored for his decision that he made for the nation.
Apart from his career as a politician and scientist, Kalam has also authored several books and has a lot of biographies on his name. He has received honorary doctorates from 40 universities while he also has been honored with Padma Bhusan (1981) and Padma Vibhusan (1990).
Known as ‘Missile Man’, Kalam’s work in nuclear research has taken India to a greater level when it comes to weapons while his work in the field of space research is equally commendable.
