Born on November 17, 1986 in Bletchley, MIlton Keynes, Greg Rutherford is the great-grandson of three times Football League First Division winner Jock Rutherford. As a youth, Rutherford was involved in various sports like football, rugby and badminton while he also had trials for Aston Villa, before he decided to pursue a career in athletics.
He won the long jump at the AAA Championship in 2005 and became the youngest athlete to do so, at the age of 18. He also won the European Junior Championship, setting a British record of 8.14 m. He finished 8th at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, while won the AAA Championship again with a jump of 8.26 m. He then won silver at European Athletics Championship the same year.
After succession of injury problems in 2007, Rutherford could not progress to the finals of any event that year. However, he progressed and got his momentum back and won the AAA title again, and reaching Olympic qualifying distance of 8.20 m. He participated in the 2008 Olympics but could not reach to the finals of the event. However, he was working hard during the tile improving his records and also participating in sprints.
He won the 2012 Olympics with a jump of 8.35m and he was then featured on Royal Mail Postage Stamp. He won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 while 2015 was a great year for him. He won the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix in February and the World Championships in August 2015 (8.41 m).
