Maureen O’Hara was born on 17 August, 1920, Ranelagh, Dublin County, Ireland. Since an early age, she had an interest in performing arts and trained in singing, dancing and acting from the age of 6 to 17. She also appeared in amateur theatre at the age of 10. Her dream at that age was to be a stage actress.
O’Hara was offered a 7 year contract by Mayflower Pictures and her first major film was ‘Jamaica Inn’ in 1939 at the age of 19. She was offered the contract based on her glamorous screen test which was appreciated a lot by the actor Charles Laughton and he made the contract happen. In the same year, 1939, she appeared in the movie ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ against the same actor Charles Laughton.
When the World War II started, her career was badly affected by it and she was mostly signed in low budget movies. Later, famous director John Ford realized her talents and signed her in the movie ‘How Green Was My Valley’. This movie won the academy award for the best picture and O’Hara’s career got a jump start. In 1947, she signed another classic movie named ‘Miracle on 34th Street’. This movie won a lot of awards and was one of the best of her career.
O’Hara was awarded dual citizenship of America and Ireland in 1946. This was the peak of her career and she was considered the most beautiful women in the world. Her famous on screen chemistry with John Wayne needs no introduction. She did five movies with him and all of them were greatly recognized and appreciated by the fans.
O’Hara also liked singing and described singing as her first love. In 1960, she starred in a Broadway musical called ‘Christine’. In the same year, she released two recordings named ‘Love Letters from Maureen O’Hara’ and ‘Maureen O’Hara Sings her Favorite Irish Songs’.
O’Hara won many accolades for her performances and contributions throughout her career. O’Hara has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to Motion Picture Industry. She was also awarded The Golden Boot award. In 2004, she was awarded the lifetime achievement award by Irish Film and Television Academy.
Maureen O’Hara died on 25 October, 2015 at the age of 95.
